In his work—and notably in his book The Conservative Futurist – How to Create the Sci-Fi World We Were Promised—James poses a radical question: how close are we to the dawn of a new age of abundance and opportunity rather than the midnight of our existence? His ideas resonated deeply with my own vision for Terra 2.0, where the interplay of technology and human ingenuity fuels a future brimming with promise.
The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists’ Doomsday Clock now ticks at a mere 89 seconds to midnight—a stark reminder of our collective vulnerability since 1947. This adjustment, driven by fears of nuclear escalation, climate collapse, unchecked AI, and the rapid spread of misinformation, can be undeniably alarming. Yet, I can’t help but wonder: does this relentless countdown to catastrophe obscure our extraordinary capacity to innovate and progress?
What if, instead of fixating on the looming threat of apocalypse, we reimagined our trajectory? Imagine a clock measuring our momentum toward a brighter, more abundant future—a Genesis Clock celebrating the breakthroughs that propel us forward. It’s a personal call to shift our focus from the brink of disaster to the promise of new beginnings, where each tick signifies a step towards a world defined by resilience, opportunity, and sustainable progress.
This piece is my invitation to look beyond the darkness and count the moments of creation and renewal—a journey I am excited to share as we explore what it truly means to be on the cusp of a transformative era.
The Doomsday Clock’s Wobbly Gears
There is no doubt that the threats highlighted by the Bulletin are very real. Yet a closer look at the Clock’s history reveals a series of curious contradictions. During the Cuban Missile Crisis—arguably our closest brush with nuclear annihilation—the hands of the Clock unexpectedly retreated from midnight, signalling a momentary shift in our collective risk perception. Fast-forward to the 1980s, when escalating Cold War tensions saw the Clock inching ever closer to midnight amid aggressive rhetoric and military posturing, only to reverse dramatically following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Even during Barack Obama’s tenure—when diplomacy and measured engagement appeared to ease global tensions—the Clock moved backwards, albeit temporarily, before new geopolitical challenges reasserted themselves. These historical reversals suggest that the Clock, while symbolically potent, is not a reliable predictor of our ultimate fate.
This is not to diminish the Bulletin’s essential role in spotlighting global risks. Instead, it prompts a deeper question: can a metric rooted in existential dread ever inspire anything more than paralysis? When fear is our sole guide, our focus remains fixed on potential losses rather than on the gains that innovation and human ingenuity can deliver.
Introducing the Genesis Clock: Measuring Abundance, Not Apocalypse
Imagine a new timepiece: the Genesis Clock. Rather than marking down the seconds to an inevitable catastrophe, it tracks our progress toward a future bursting with innovation and boundless opportunity. AI is, in every sense, a tool for empowerment—a catalyst that fuels human creativity and ingenuity.
Similarly, consider the evolution of nuclear technology. Frequently associated only with destruction, modern nuclear innovations are rewriting the narrative. Today’s reactors generate clean, low-carbon energy that reduces our dependence on fossil fuels, while advancements in nuclear science are driving breakthroughs in medical imaging and cancer treatments. Even the promise of nuclear fusion looms on the horizon, offering the potential for virtually limitless, sustainable energy that could transform our global energy landscape.
The renewable energy revolution is another beacon of hope. Solar and wind power have not only become markedly more efficient but also dramatically cheaper, making sustainable energy solutions a reality for communities worldwide. With global green investments now soaring and costs plunging by as much as 90% in recent years, the shift toward a resilient, eco-friendly future is well underway. This is the kind of progress that the Genesis Clock is designed to celebrate.
Yet, the Genesis Clock is more than a measure of technological triumphs—it is a testament to human ingenuity across every sphere of progress. It gauges our leaps in radical longevity, where breakthroughs in biotechnology and gene editing are not only extending our lives but enhancing the quality of those years. It tracks our strides in space exploration and the establishment of self-sustaining off-world colonies, ensuring that our species can thrive beyond Earth. It even acknowledges the transformative power of blockchain and decentralised technologies, which are redefining economic systems, strengthening transparency, and empowering communities to share in the abundance of our digital future.
In a world often preoccupied with impending doom, the Genesis Clock invites us to shift our focus. It is a call to recognise every breakthrough, every innovative spark that propels us forward into a new epoch—one where progress is measured in moments of creation and renewal. Here, risk is not a sign of impending collapse but the very fuel that drives us toward a dawn of unparalleled abundance and opportunity.
The Case for Radical Optimism
Critics might dismiss this stance as overly optimistic or naïve, yet the evidence of progress speaks for itself. Over the past few decades, humanity has achieved transformative milestones:
Global poverty has plummeted from 36% in 1990 to under 9% today.
Child mortality rates have decreased by an impressive 60% since 1990.
Renewable energy now supplies 30% of global electricity—and this share continues to rise.

Consider the Apollo programme, the drive towards establishing self-sustaining off-world colonies, or the invention of the internet—all once deemed reckless gambles by conventional wisdom, yet each has fundamentally reshaped our society.
In our current era, techno-optimism is more than a hopeful ideal—it is measurable progress. Carbon levels in the atmosphere are beginning to decline, commercial nuclear fusion is edging closer to both technological and economic viability, and global efforts are making significant headway in eradicating undernourishment. Moreover, ambitious endeavours such as extending the average human lifespan to 120 years, developing vaccines for cancer and cures for Alzheimer’s, and even the potential resurrection of extinct species like the Woolly mammoth, underscore our relentless pursuit of innovation.
Ask yourself: can we soon deflect a large asteroid or comet hurtling toward Earth? Will even the poorest nation achieve economic standards reminiscent of the early 2000s? Can productivity growth among rich nations soar to at least 50% above its postwar average? Each of these questions is a frontier of possibility, signalling that our journey towards a new epoch is already well underway.
The future is not written in the language of fear, but in the promising dialect of human ingenuity and resilience. By shifting our focus from impending doom to the abundance of innovation and opportunity, we can celebrate every breakthrough as a step closer to a brighter, more abundant world.
Terra 2.0 and the Evolution of Homo Technologicus
In the spirit of Terra 2.0, we are charting a course towards a future where human ingenuity and technological prowess are seamlessly intertwined—a society evolving into what we might call Homo technologicus.
